June 29th, 2011 Hello to all! Thought I'd give you an update on what I've been up to!
The spring tour went extremely well! I really enjoyed all of the shows, and had a wonderful time playing with so many different amazing musicians! From Montreal to Saskatoon, I toured solo meeting many kick ass characters along the way. In Kitchener I hung out with my friend Charlena Russell and her partner, Laura, who fed me my first bbq of the season, and put me up in there comfy home! Thanks to Charlena for making the show a great success! Can't wait to return in July! In Thunder bay I shared the bill with a wonderful man and musician, Mr.Roger Marin, with whom I shared some amazing conversation about the business, he fixed up old Betsy (my van) and booked me at his summer festival called Cicada Fest in Saint-Catherine’s, Ontario, which I am extremely excited for! It sounds like a great festival and I can't wait to tell you all about it! From there I drove to Winnipeg and had a night off with brilliant musician, Sheena Grobb, who fed me an eclectic salad filled with the healthy goodness that my body was desperately searching for! After so much lonely driving it was a pleasant relief to drink wine and share in-depth conversation mixed with completely tasteless jokes that left us keeled over with laughter. I don't know about you Sheena and friends, but I don't think I've had that good of an abs workout in years! Much love, and thanks again for the good times! During my next long lonely drive I felt the kink unwind from my neck and shoulders as driving in the prairies requires little effort besides that of staying awake with lots of gas station coffee! I stopped in at the letterbox gallery in Lumsden to let my grandparents know that I was alive and to give them hugs. Once in Saskatoon I visited with my family for a few days, wrote a new song and played a killer Saskatoon show before hitting the road again. It was so nice to see all of my hometown friends!
It was soon time to hit the road again. I picked up genius musicians, Kyle Krysa and Enver Hampton at 6am and headed further west. We shared many wonderful human experiences and shows. Getting to see my Aunty Rhonda and my cousins in Calgary was a blessing as always. Lots of laughs to be shared! Thank you guys! It's always a relief to spend time with such cool family members. The poetry feature at Van Slam was way too much fun as always, and all of the west coast shows went extremely well. The boys and I slayed all of our shows and laughed way too many times a day! We stayed with a beautiful 'purple apple' in Victoria, played with seals, ate an entire crab each, found a star fish friend named Victor, dodged some wild animals and shared many pints. Thank you to everyone on the west coast who made the tour a success including Trigger in Vancouver and Shayne in Victoria! And don’t forget the always stunning, Zach Logan in Vernon. We then headed back eastward which included a house concert in Calgary hosted by my dear friends, Gavin and Meagan Logan. What a great time! We ate and drank and put on a very fun acoustified concert, which everyone seemed to really enjoy! Bravo Gavin and Meagan! We thank you greatly for hosting us and creating such an excellent event!
It was then time to drop of my lovely western band mates at their homes in Saskatoon. I won't lie; I missed you for weeks afterwards! I Can't wait to see you both again. I then picked up my sister Jen Lane and her husband John Antonuik and began to head back east. Our first stop was in Regina where we played a small resto-bar called the fainting goat. We filled our bellies then played for a small but mighty audience that included my sweetie-pie aunty Kim and her partner. Also in the audience were old friends whom I'd met at the Centennial Gala in 2005. One of which put us up in her lovely home for the night. Thanks again Cindy! The next day we arrived in Winnipeg where Jen and John did an opening set and I performed alongside a pick up band consisting of Ben Wytinck and Pete Dunlop. Wow! You guys killed it! Thanks again. I can't wait to perform with you again in the future!
After some central shows we began the journey into the most gruelling section of Canada. Northern Ontario. I have toured this space many times in the past and am used to its wrath, but for Jen and John, its vastness created a new callus. This having been the tail end of a long 6 week journey for me, I was beginning to feel myself having aged. My hair overgrown, eyebrows desperate for a plucking, my body begging for sleep and my brained perma-fried on caffeine. We powered through to Ottawa. All of my road worn feelings were soon vanished when I arrived to Ottawa to discover my partner; Taylor was no longer a virtual girlfriend, but a real one! With my energy rejuvenated with love I was prepared to open for Colin James alongside Jen and John. This was the show I'd been waiting for! Our 3 part harmonies and guitars were the perfect poison. Amazing show and great as always to see Colin again, he is a wonderful artist and since I was a child, a huge inspiration. Great to see you again, Colin.
After a wonderful show, Jen and John set flight and I returned to Montreal for a small rest before returning to Ottawa for a ‘women of blues’ showcase with Romi Mayes, Suzie Vinnick and Little Miss Higgins. Thanks to Pascal Lepage and Sylvain Lamothe for backing me up at this show, you two killed it! What a pleasure! The energy of all of these powerful women made this showcase one of the books. Thanks again to everyone, mainly Prairie Scene for putting on the powerhouse festival! Prairie people know what's up!
I recently played a few Montreal shows and have been focusing a lot on writing, which is producing some gooders for the next album. This week I will be heading to NXNE to Toronto to play a showcase with Tim Vaughn on bass and Kyle Krysa on drums. After that I will have about ten days to rest and pack before I begin my next journey towards the west. Not looking forward to the mosquitoes, but I am thrilled to have the courage to lead my gypsy life lead by music.
Until next time,
live life to its fullest and BOW AND DRILL THE SPARK!

Bio
Megan Lane fills the gaps between blues, jazz, rock, and soul with fierce passion. An experienced song-writer, performer, and producer, Lane is touring her latest album Bow and Drill the Spark (2009). With this release Lane showcases an incredibly diverse style that is both sensitive and provocative. Igniting her audience from the first note, Lane has shared the stage with Colin James, Buffy St. Marie, and many others.
Lane’s distinct voice moves back and forth between a deep dark growl and the breaking point of an aching cry, and her weeping guitar is anything but gentle. Her music resonates with the intensity and wisdom of someone who knows how to make fire from friction, and it leaves a burning mark.
Her second album Wrapped in Plastic (2006) extended the totally unique blues/rock trajectory laid down in Purple and Blue (2004), a debut nominated for Outstanding Blues recording by the Western Canadian Music Awards. Winning awards and grants from the Saskatchewan Arts Board and Rawlco Radio, Lane’s recordings have received national airplay on the CBC and Rawlco Radio. Her performances have been nationally broadcast on CBC television and CTV’s “Good Morning Canada.” Along with bandmates Kyle Krysa (drums) and Gent Laird (bass), Lane has performed across the country, including at the Calgary International Blues Festival (2007) and the Sasktel Saskatchewan Jazz Festival (2008, 2006, 2005, 2004).
Besides touring and promoting extensively, Lane gives much of her time to charity organizations. She has been recognized for her contributions to society by the Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan (2005). Also involved in a variety of community cultural groups, Lane performed as a featured member of the Saskatoon SLAM Team at the National Spoken Word Festival in Victoria, B.C. (2009), and plays drums as a member of the successful group Kamila Martel and the Ne’erdowells. Lane is very excited and honoured to be representing Saskatchewan at the upcoming 2010 Vancouver Olympics in February.
